In the wake of the establishment of the State of Israel, most of the Jews of Iraq made their way to Israel, guided by the Zionist Movement that was formed in Iraq.
Once in Israel, the Iraqi immigrants suffered harsh conditions of absorption. Efforts towards progress in education and economy that had been made in Iraq, prior to their Aliyah, came to a standstill and the Iraqi immigrants were housed in the transit camps (ma'abarot), barracks and tents.
Nevertheless, the Iraqi Olim successfully became integrated and prominent in the Israeli society, in all the domains of life. They were active in the politics, economy and culture of the young State. Today, there is a strong presence of Iraqi Olim in academic circles, law, trade and management, medicine and security. Many well-known writers, artists and reputed media personalities are of Iraqi origin.
