In 1984, Pope John Paul II became the first pope to set foot on Canadian soil when the papal plane landed at the Quebec City airport. Already an accomplished traveler, the Pope was on his 24th pilgrimage (he has made more than 100 trips around the world). Everywhere he went during his 12-day tour across Canada, large crowds flocked to him. On September 9, upon his arrival in Ste-Foy, a suburb of Quebec City, the Holy Father began a 15,000 km marathon from the Atlantic to the Pacific. By the time his stay ended on September 20, he had visited Quebec City, Trois-Rivières, Saint John, Moncton, Halifax, Toronto, Midland (Ontario), Winnipeg/St-Boniface, Edmonton, Yellowknife, Vancouver and Ottawa-Hull. Unfortunately, his planned trip to Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories was cancelled due to severe weather conditions.
