Cape Matapan forms the southernmost point of the central headland of the Morea (Peloponnese). A sea battle took place here on July 19, 1717 between the allied fleets of Venice, Portugal and Malta and the Ottoman and Egyptian forces. The Turks were defeated by the combined forces of their opponents.
