Pope John Paul II. visited Slovakia for three times (1990, 1995 and 2003). This commemorative medal reminds the first one - less then year after Velvet Revolution, when communist regime ended in Czechoslovakia and religious freedom was granted. Except Bratislava he visited also Prague and Velehrad (both in Czech Republic).John Paul II. was the pope in years 1978 - 2005 (the third longest pontificate in history). He was beatified in 2010 and later declared to be saint by Catholic Church in 2014.
