Comment
1837: Maillard de Chambure launches the idea of a monument to Rameau, but the project remains a dead letter. The site was, however, definitively fixed. At the time, the eastern wing of the Musée des Beaux-Arts had not yet been built. Despite this, the desire to create a cultural and historical space was already present: theater, museum, palace, statue of Rameau.1860: Charles Poisot, author of works on Rameau, took up the project in the run-up to the centenary of the musician's death. A broad consensus emerged, but financial resources were lacking.
1863: the municipality took the decision to erect the church on May 21.
1864: the ministerial decree approving the decision was published on November 10. But then interest waned completely.
1875: Eugène Guillaume proposes his model to the town council.
1876: The statue is ready, but there's not enough money to cast it in bronze. On August 12, the municipality organizes a 'Fêtes nationales Rameau' to convince future subscribers, during which a provisional bronze plaster monument is solemnly unveiled.
1878: after several refusals, the French government agreed to supply the bronze. The inauguration took place on August 12.
1943: the statue is removed on January 13 by the Nazis and melted down.
1950: replaced by a stone reproduction by Lefebvre.
2016: in March, the statue is removed for restoration. It was reinstalled on boulevard Georges Clemenceau in June.
