Heinrich was a wealthy businessman, making his fortune in importing guano, along with his brother Albertus. When the guano industry collapsed, the brothers invested in real estate. They also acquired the Norddeutsche bank and Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung . Elisabeth is known for keeping a diary that is now in the Hamburg State archives.
