During WW2 in 1942 for Russian payments for ordered weapons from the USA the Soviet government loaded 5.5 tons of gold on the british cruiser HMS Edinburgh. 5 days later in the polar sea the ship was sunk down by destroyers Z 24, Z 25 as well as the destroyer Z 7 Hermann Schoemann. The gold remained at the bottom of the sea for nearly 40 years.
1981 the treasure with a diving team aboard the ship 'Stephaniturm' managed to recover the treasure.
