Comment

George V was became King of the British Empire and Emperor of India on the 6th of May 1910 and remained until his death on the 20th of January 1936. This medal commemorates his coronation on the 12th December 1911. He celebrated his Silver Jubilee in 1935. During his reign he saw the dawn of modern 19th century warfare in the Great War and became the first Monarch of the house of Windsor as his Grandfather’s name ‘Saxe-Coburg and Gotha’ was too German at a time when his nation and Germany were at war. He was succeeded by his son Edward VIII who abdicated the same year as his father’s death to marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson and allowing George V’s younger son to become King George VI.
