Comment

Edward VIII gold Abdication Medal 1936 By L.E. Pinches, struck by John Pinches, Ltd., BHM-4277. Obv. Crowned and draped bust of Edward VIII right. Rev. ASCENDED-THE THRONE-JAN. 20th 1936-ABDICATED-DEC. 10th-1936, within a wreath. Sharply struck, with matte-like surfaces and high relief. MS65 seems a very conservative grade, as the appearance is superb, and no flaws are noted. No official Royal Mint medal was struck, for the abdication, because of the controversy that raged in 1936 over the Prince of Wales, who became King upon his father's death, but was determined to marry an American woman who had been twice divorced. This was not acceptable in England at that time, on two counts: she was a commoner, and divorced. because of the controversy that raged in 1936 over the Prince of Wales, who became King upon his father's death, but was determined to marry an American woman who had been twice divorced. This was not acceptable in England at that time, on two counts: she was a commoner, and divorced. A number of privately made medals were created at the time, by those who supported the Duke and also for souvenir sellers. Mintage of only 100 pieces.
