This medal may have been designed to be worn as a lapel pin or broach, since there are traces of a mounting for something that may have been a pin on the reverse. The hole in the example shown is post-mint damage.The portraits show the future King George V and his wife, Mary of Teck during the period immediately after his father, King Edward VII, ascended to the throne. He only carried the title "Duke of Cornwall and York" from January to November 1901 and this allows this medal to be dated with some certainty.
The Duke undertook a tour of the British Empire in that year and this is probably a commemorative piece of one of those royal visits.
