Dubai Natural Gas Company (DUGAS) was founded in 1977 to provide efficient and reliable management and operation of gas processing facilities that include the design, engineering and construction of the Dubai Government’s onshore and offshore gas complexes consisting of platforms, pipelines, processing plant and terminal.
The Jebel Ali Plant, at the time the most modern facility of its type, was inaugurated on April 22nd, 1980 by the late ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Dubai consequently became a producer and exporter of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
The Dubai Gas Recovery Project, “Capture the Flame”, ended the flaring of gas at Dubai’s offshore oil fields. Offshore compression platforms send the gas through subsea pipelines to onshore processing plants where it is converted into hydrocarbon products. These are used locally and shipped to world markets through a port terminal.
In 1995, Dugas entered the petrochemical business, bringing on stream its MTBE plant which produces methyl-tertiary butyl ether, an additive for unleaded gasoline. MTBE helps raise the octane level of gasoline by supplying additional oxygen during combustion, allowing cleaner and more complete burning thereby reducing emissions. It is now exported world-wide from Jebel Ali.
