Even as Crown Prince, Frederick William exerted great influence on the government of Prussia, which he officially took over when he was crowned King in 1713. His regime was characterised above all by his insight that Prussia could only hold its own against the great powers with a strong army. With his strict conception of work and the fulfilment of duty, the "soldier king" thus actually created the conditions for Prussia's rise to become a major European power.© Göde
