On the lower half -landscape showing the fortified city of Karlovac on a hill between two conjoining rivers Kupa and Korana, in the chief are the sun and the crescent. In the middle of this large shield one can find a small crest with initials of Joseph II. Over the whole crest stands a folk crown. The Austrians built Karlovac from scratch in 1579. in order to strengthen their southern defenses against Ottoman encroachments. The city was named after its founder, Charles II, Archduke of Austria. The German original name was Karlstadt or Carlstadt ("Charlestown").The coat of arms was granted by King Joseph II on 8th October 1781.
