Comment

A graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique (1965), engraver Claude Gondard is a marine engineer. From 1970 to 1977, he was involved in shipbuilding at the Brest arsenal, where he also designed the medals.
He won a gold medal at the 1975 Salon des Artistes Français.
The navy loves medals and "tapes de bouches", so naturally Claude Gondard designed the medals for his own ships, and then for those of his comrades' ships. That's how he came into contact with the Administration des Monnaies et Médailles, which has been commissioning him ever since, or striking the medals he created for various companies, administrations or organizations. He is also a medallist of the Artistes français in the "medals" section.
Claude Gondard's medallic work is considerable, with some 300 medals produced by the Monnaie de Paris, fifty of which are devoted to wine. In particular, in the years 88-92, with his partner Serge Tchekhoff, who now runs a fine estate in the Bordeaux region, he produced a series of some forty medals on fine French wines.
This collection, struck in silver by the Monnaie de Paris, brings together many of the finest jewels in the crown of French viticulture. More precisely, the medals are "belle épreuve" quality, 41 mm in diameter, struck in 1er titre silver.
