Watermael-Boitsfort is one of Belgium's 19 bilingual communes in the Brussels-Capital region.
The word Watermael (traces of it are found only around 1191, the name used until then being Guatremal) comes from: water (Dutch for "water") and mahl( Latinmallum, "plaid", place where justice is administered). According to Alphonse Wauters, the name comes from Wactarmala, derived from two Germanic words: wachter, "guardian", and mal, Latin mallum, "plaid".
The word Boitsfort (appearing around 1227) is less precise: there are several possibilities to choose from. In short, a document from this period gives the name of Godefroid de Boudesfort. For others, the word Boud or Baldo is an abbreviation of Baudouin, and the word fort refers to a domain, i.e. the Domaine de Baudouin.
