This medal is a part of the E.W. Cole's series but was not issued by E.W. Cole or his relations. An initial set of new six tokens was produced in 1984 as a commemorative item for the release of a Cole's handbook of medals and other items. The author George Dean finally released the Handbook in 1988 and the pre-issue subscribers to the Handbook were entitled to purchase the set of six tokens in the set.
George then produced a second set of 5 tokens in 1988 numbered D105 Gilt, D107 Silver plated, D108 Bronze , D109 Copper, and D110 Aluminium. They were originally sold only in a set but these sets are starting to be broken up and can be found individually. D106 is a silver version of the above with only 10 minted.
This medal (D111) is a mule of the reverse dies used in Set 1 and Set 2. One of the reverses (Be Good) is a reproduction of a rare type not normally seen in collections while the other reverse is a new design (But one E.W. Cole) based on Cole's Palm or Fern Tree design to commemorate his life. It is numbered D111 but is not included in his handbook as Dean finished at D110.
