Issued in a blue Royal Mint case with a certificate of authenticity.Fifty years ago the brave men of the Royal Air Force fought in their Hurricanes and Spitfires to match the might of the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain. Between June and October 1940, a total of 4387 Royal Air Force, Fleet Air Arm and Allied aircrew took to the air to repel the enemy. Most were young men. Many went into battle with just a few hours flying experience, knowing that their life expectancy could be measured in days. Weeks, if they were lucky. Over 1,500 did not return. One in three aircrew gave their lives so that Britain might remain free.
In conjunction with the RAF Benevolent Fund's 'Reach for the Sky Appeal', the Royal Mint has produced the Official Battle of Britain Commemorative Medallion. Struck in Sterling (.925) silver, this beautiful medallion bears two superb designs by Mary Milner Dickens, which were selected after a limited competition in which ten artists took part.
