Comment

During the revolt against Spain, the rebels offered the crown of the Spanish Netherlands to the Duke of Anjou, brother of King Henry III of France, in 1583. They made it a condition that the traditional liberties enjoyed by the provinces and cities of the region for centuries be respected. As a French prince, not used to such rights for the people, he decided to take the country militarily and started by sending an army of 4000 men to Antwerp, where there were no troops, so the capture should be easy. But his army was severely defeated by the burghers of Antwerp who defended their city. After that, there was no more talk about this project.
