Alumni of the Lycée- Collège de La Tour d'Auvergne in Quimper 29 France. ... former students and civil servants of the Lycée to become:Amicale des anciens ... A commemorative bronze medal was created in 1988.
La Tour d'Auvergne, "this brave among the brave" as Lazare Carnot called him, died on June 27, 1800 in Austria, sword in hand. His remains were transferred to the Panthéon on August 4, 1889, and his heart to the Invalides. Several statues were erected in his memory, in Carhaix, where he lived, and in Quimper, where he studied. In Quimper, a square and a college bear his name. In reality, historians have counted nine supposed birthplaces, in Pontivy, Laniscat, Carnoët, Maël-Carhaix, Trébrivan, Trémargat, St Hernin and Carhaix. The ninth has long been the subject of much speculation, being the Château de Kerbauffret from which it took its name. This place was recently located in Lanrivain. This is doubtful, as the estate is more than thirty kilometers from Carhaix, where he was baptized in the church of St Trémeur. It is more likely that he was born in Saint Hernin, where his father, a lawyer, was steward of Château de Kergoat. His ancestry is thought to be of Breton nobility. Little is known of this man's life. In 1797, he volunteered to replace a young conscript in the army. On leaving the Jesuit college in Quimper, he chose the army, whereas his father wanted him to become a lawyer.
