From 17 to 25 September 1944 there was heavy fighting in and around the city of Arnhem. The airborne landings and battles were part of Operation Market Garden. More than 5,000 men landed in the afternoon of 17 September by parachute and glider near Wolfheze and north of Heelsum. A day later, 1,900 paratroopers landed on the Ginkel heath near Ede and gliders with personnel and equipment in the vicinity of Renkum and Wolfheze. After heavy fighting, the Allies failed to hold on to the bridge over the Rhine in Arnhem, so that in the night of 25 to 26 September some 2,400 soldiers managed to reach a safe area after crossing the Rhine at Oosterbeek. Nearly 6,500 soldiers were taken prisoner of war and only liberated in April or May 1945.
In order not to forget the sacrifices of the Allied soldiers, the Renkum Police Sports Association organised the Airbornemars for the first time in 1947, a commemorative march to honour those who fought for the liberation of our country in 1944. About 2,000 walkers took part in the first march. Thousands of walkers are now participating in the Airborne March. Participants can choose from four routes: 10, 15, 25 and 40 kilometers. The routes pass important places from that one week in September 1944. Members of the Renkum Police Sports Association and hundreds of volunteers are committed to organizing a great walking day every year.
