The engraver
Gaspar-Auguste Bija (1872-1957) was born in Schlockschen (now in Russia). He emigrated to Belgium in 1897 and was naturalized in 1931.
He was a sculptor and medal-maker, with a sizeable output of medals (some 250), mainly cast portraits, produced in his studio at the Timmerhoutkaai in Brussels. His work spans the period from 1911 to 1948.

This is probably a generic medal used for the competition: the medal may have been made before 1934.
The competition site
The village of Lierneux is located in Belgium, south of the province of Liège. Surrounded by meadows, the hamlet of Sart (Grand-Sart and Petit-Sart) is an agricultural village with several farmhouses built of local stone (schist). "Sart" is a shortened form of essart, a topographical name derived from the Latin exsartum , a cleared area. It is a widespread locality name.
