Comment

The "Peso del Sitio" (Siege Peso) was the only silver coin minted at Montevideo, Uruguay. It was minted during the Montevideo Siege, using silver donated by citizens, and is esteemed were minted 1226 pieces only. Luckily, most of them still exist.
"Peso del Sitio" also was the last siege coin minted in America, and first silver coin minted at River Plate region (Montevideo, Colonia, Buenos Aires).
The medal uses several elements of the original coin, like the arms and the center of reverse, with face value surrounded by 9 5-pointed stars, representing the political distribution of the country. Even is noticeable the stars are not regular, upper point is lightly displaced to right, like the present on original coin.
"Peso del Sitio" is under process to be declared as "National Historic Monument", just waiting for declaration by Education and Culture Ministry; that is the last step of the procedure.
