Sacred hills, and you holy ruins,
Which Rome's name alone retains,
Old monuments, which still support
The powdery honor of so many divine souls:

Triumphal arches, neighboring points of heaven,
Which even heaven is astonished to see,
Weary, little by little ashes you become,
Fable of the people and public rapines!

And though time for time makes war
The buildings, if time
Works and names finally atterre.

Sad desires, so live that contented:
For if time ends so hard a thing,
It will end the pain I endure.
