He held the regency following the resignation of King Leopold III from September 20, 1944 until July 20, 1950.Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg was born in Brussels on November 3, 1901, and died on September 25, 1983. He succeeded Albert I, who died in an accident on February 23, 1934. He was forced to abdicate on July 16, 1951, following the "royal question" that was tearing the country apart.
The medal comes in a variety of forms. There is a uniface variant and another identical to the one pictured, but with the inscription "VERS L'AVENIR" (the name of a newspaper) in the cartouche and 1914-15 underneath.
