Comment
Charles Alexandre De Calonne was appointed Controller General of Finances and Minister of State to Louis XVI after Necker's dismissal. He wanted to create a shield to restore the country's finances, but his wish never came to fruition. Droz's engraving was so exceptional that the shield became immensely popular. This numbered reproduction (500 copies) of the Calonne shield by the Monnaie de Paris is rare.
