The Bishop of Ypres of the Congregation of the Oratory was at the origin of an important politico-religious movement, Jansenism, condemned by the Roman Catholic Church in 1653.From 1848 to 1850, Adolphe-Christian Jouvenel engraved and published in Brussels a collection of 25 bronze medals in ±47 mm modules, depicting portraits of "Belgium's great men". At the time, each medal was sold for 4 Belgian francs.
34 mm bronze or brass tokens reproducing some of these medals were also engraved, to make the publication accessible to all, according to the prospectus of the time, with a more democratic selling price of 50 centimes.
