Comment

The medal commemorates the German victory and destruction of the British fleet, under Rear-Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock, at Santa Maria, off the Chilean coast, in November 1914. However, in early December, a further naval engagement off the Falkland Islands resulted in the destruction of several German ships which had attempted to raid the British supply base at Port Stanley.
