VALENCIENNES - CONDÉ SUR L'ESCAUTIn 1676, Louis XIV seized Condé (the siege was led by Vauban), which became definitively French in 1678 under the Treaty of Nijmegen. Vauban and then du Buat improved the fortifications of the old stronghold, but this did not prevent François de Saxe-Cobourg's Austrian troops from occupying the town after a 92-day blockade (July 10, 1793). Cleared of the Austrians on September 3, 1794, it fell into the hands of the "Coalisés" when Napoleon fell (1815): they left only three years later, in 1818.
