The fifth of the Seven Wonders of the World, construction of the Mausoleum, mostly in marble, was probably begun during the king's lifetime and completed in 350 BC. The project was conceived by his wife and sister, Artemis II. Rectangular in shape, it was around 45 meters high, divided into several levels, including a stepped podium on which was the mortuary chamber surrounded by columns. Above, a colonnade supported a pyramidal roof crowned by a chariot drawn by four horses. It retained its splendor until the 12th century, when it was damaged by an earthquake.
