Guioth #133, plate XVI in "Histoire Numismatique de la Belgique."On August 9, 1832, the marriage of Leopold I, King of the Belgians, and Princess Louise d'Orléans took place at the Château de Compiègne. While diplomats at the London Conference were negotiating recognition of the treaty ratifying the creation of Belgium, the idea of sealing a diplomatic alliance between Belgium and France through a dynastic union was taking shape, a project that King Leopold was working on with determination. King Louis-Philippe and Queen Marie-Amélie, despite the pain of the inevitable separation, were also in favor. The marriage proposal was accepted in May. During the Entretiens de Compiègne, from May 28 to June 1, the sovereigns discreetly studied the financial terms of the marriage agreement.
