Comment
"Silent Night, Holy Night"The festivities of Christmas are celebrated annually around the birth of Jesus Christ. At home, but also often in the Church.
Traditionally, Christmas carols are sung that have their origin in many different parts of the world. One of the most famous Christmas songs is the "Silent Night, Holy Night" by Joseph Mohr & Franz Gruber. 200 years ago, on Christmas Day 1818, "Silent Night, Holy Night" was first performed in the St. Nikolaus Church in Oberndorf (near Salzburg, Austria).
Joseph Mohr, who wrote the text, asks the composer Franz Gruber if he can make a melody and a guitar accompaniment to the text he wrote. He asks for guitar accompaniment because the organ in the church is broken. According to a popular reading, because mice have eaten from the bellows and have thus made a cheese with holes.
In the Netherlands there are several versions of the song, but the Catholic version is the most faithful translation of the German original text.
