Christmas is the festival that is celebrated around the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas Eve is celebrated in many families on December 24. The Christmas tree is decorated, full of lights, decorations such as balls, angels, bells, with a shiny peak on top. Under the Christmas tree is sometimes a nativity scene with the figures of the biblical Christmas story depicted by means of dolls. The nativity scene is an idea of Francis of Assisi, who in 1223 had the idea to set up a living nativity scene in the village of Greggio (Italy).Santa Claus is a descendant of Sinterklaas. The Sinterklaas tradition was taken by Dutch and German emigrants to America. There Sinterklaas became Santa Claus. Santa Claus has about the same customs as Sinterklaas, such as giving presents, a long beard and a red suit, but he is stripped of all religious symbolism.
The image of Santa Claus - Santa Claus as we know it today - was conceived around the 1930s by the advertising writers of Coca Cola from the United States. Santa Claus lives in the North Pole with his reindeer.
