THE DOLDER
At once a belfry, a watchtower and the city's upper gate, the 25m-high Dolder is Riquewihr's most emblematic monument. Erected in 1291, at the same time as the first fortification, this tower has retained its medieval appearance, with its austere exterior façade designed to deter invaders, and its interior adorned with corbelled half-timbering. The tower also houses a museum (mid-May to late June and early September to early November: Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 2-6pm; July-August: daily 2-6pm).
