La Rochelle's Grosse-Horloge is an ancient city gate dating back to the early city walls of Guillaume X. No longer needed when the city expanded, it was fitted with a bell and clock in 1478 and became the city's belfry, replacing the Porte de Mallevault. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grosse_HorlogeTour Saint-Nicolas (14th century) is, along with Tour de la Chaîne and Tour de la Lanterne, one of the three towers on La Rochelle's waterfront, and one of the two emblematic towers of the Old Port, of which it is the majestic gateway. For five centuries, it defended the channel and served as the point of attachment for the chain, stretched from the other shore, used to prevent access to the port. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tour_Saint-Nicolas
