During the French campaign, on February 2, 1814, the armies of the Sixth Coalition besieged Vitry-le-François, which was bombarded. But, faced with the resistance of the city, the foreign powers withdrew. However, they returned on the 5th, in greater numbers. For fear of being destroyed, the city opened its doors to them, as it only had weak fortifications. While Alexander I of Russia, Frederick William III of Prussia and Field Marshal Schwarzenberg were gathered in the city, Napoleon moved towards Vitry-le-François and surrounded it. However, the fall of Paris, at the end of March, forced him to abdicate. When Napoleon returned in 1815, the city was again besieged but held out until the emperor's second defeat. The enemy armies then entered the city, causing some destruction, but limited. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitry-le-Fran%C3%A7oisPrice
