The Paris Commune was France's largest insurrectionary commune of 1870-1871, lasting 72 days from March 18, 1871, to the "Bloody Week" of May 21-28, 1871. This insurrection refused to recognize the newly-elected government of the National Assembly, which had been elected by universal male suffrage, and chose to outline a libertarian-style organization for the town, based on direct democracy, which gave rise to communalism. This project for a political organization to unite the various insurrectionary communes was never implemented, as they were crushed by the 1871 internal campaign, of which the Semaine Sanglante was the Paris episode and the most famous repression.
