Joseph Ferdinand Cheval, better known as Le facteur Cheval, born April 19, 1836 in Charmes-sur-l'Herbasse (Drôme) and died August 19, 1924 in Hauterives (Drôme), was a French letter carrier famous for spending 33 years of his life building a monument he called the "Palais idéal".He also spent a further eight years building his own tomb. Both Palais and tombeau are considered masterpieces of naive architecture.
