The Allied landings, known as D-Day, represented the first hours of Operation Neptune, itself the initial phase of Operation Overlord, designed to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation. Initially scheduled for June 5, the landing was postponed to June 6 due to poor weather conditions. The D-Day landings on June 6, 1944 were a decisive turning point in the Second World War: the Liberation of France and Europe began on the beaches of Normandy. It was in Normandy that the face of today's world took shape. As early as 1942, with the Raid on Dieppe, the history of Normandy as a whole was intimately linked to that of the return of Freedom, Peace and Reconciliation. At midnight on June 6 and in the days that followed, some 150,000 men and 20,000 vehicles, representing a total of 15 different nations, landed on the beaches of Normandy to liberate the territory. It took the Allies more than three months to reach Paris and liberate the capital, putting an end to 4 years of German occupation.
