Today, the Bay of the Somme is internationally recognized for its ecological richness; in particular, it is considered an ornithological mecca thanks to the richness of its environments, which offer favorable conditions for both sedentary and migratory birds. This richness led to the creation, in its northern part (mouth of the Maye), of a national hunting reserve in 1968, transformed into a nature reserve (with modified boundaries) in 1994, the Réserve naturelle nationale de la baie de Somme, of which the Parc du Marquenterre is a part.
The Baie de Somme is also renowned for the presence of seals, which it is recommended not to approach: harbor seals: population on the rise, with numbers exceeding 100 in 2006 and 2007, 150 in 2009 and 2010, 190 in 2011, 550 in 2016; gray seals, increasingly numerous. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baie_de_Somme
