Edmond Rostand was 32 when, having recovered from pleurisy contracted during rehearsals for L'Aiglon, he rented the villa Etchegorria in Cambo. On his return from Paris, where he had just been elected to the Académie française (1901), he bought a plot of land on a hill where the Arraga river meanders.
