A compass rose is a figure showing the cardinal points: north, south, east, west and intermediate directions, up to 32 directions. In fact, the original roses did not indicate four directions, but eight winds.Today, wind roses are often marked W instead of O, for West. The same was true in the past, when east could be indicated by the letter L (for Italian levante, levant) and north by the letter T (for Italian tramontana, tramontane), or by a fleur-de-lys.
Medieval compass roses sometimes had east at the top, to indicate that Jerusalem (east from the European point of view) was superior to everything else.
