Like the Fier gorges or the Sierroz gorges, a tourist activity around the Pont-du-Diable gorges has been developing since the 19th century. Jean Bochaton, a carpenter from Saint-Paul-en-Chablais and settled in Jotty, obtained in 1892 a concession from the communes of La Vernaz and La Forclaz authorizing him to "build a wooden staircase with iron supports to allow the visit of the Gorges du Pont du Diable". He dug steps in the rock and installed footbridges for the first visitors in 1893, who were mostly spa-goers from Thonon-les-Bains and Evian-les-Bains.
He managed the site from 1893 to 1909 which was then taken over by Jean Calligaris until 1936 who built the Mont Ouzon hotel just opposite. The creation of paid vacations in 1936 favored the development of the site which was then threatened with abandonment. Jean Raibaud, a metal construction engineer who had been converted to tourism, succeeded him and new footbridges were built. He managed the site until his death in 1980. The construction of the Jotty dam in 1949 diverted part of the water from the Dranse de Morzine, but a minimal flow was maintained. The lease was bought by the Bouvet brothers and the town hall of La Vernaz in 1983 who sold it in 2018 to Jocelyne and Didier Rineau, the current owners. The footbridges are completely redone during the first half of 2020, a new path is set up and a "step in the void" (the Pas du Diable) is accessible since July 2020. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorges_du_Pont-du-Diable
