Erected in 1838 in honour of General-Count de Boigne, the fountain is one of the city's most famous monuments. The 17.65-metre-high ensemble, built of Saint-Sulpice limestone, is a skilful superposition of three monuments: a fountain, a column and a statue. The fountain features the Savoy cross in its plan. Four cast-iron elephants, joined at the rump, pour water from their horns into an octagonal basin, each bearing a combat tower topped by a bas-relief or inscription. On top of the elephants stands a large column, symbolized by a palm trunk. Its base is adorned with a wide variety of trophies: "Persian, Mughal and Hindu weapons; various objects recalling the customs, arts and civilization of the peoples that General de Boigne fought or governed, make up the trophies ". https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fontaine_des_%C3%A9l%C3%A9phants
