Comments:Praised by Voltaire, this great financier took up his post when the state had accumulated two billion livres in debt. He managed to restore credit thanks to loans from banker Samuel Bernard, but was deposed by the Regent on the death of Louis XIV. A worthy emulator of his uncle Colbert, his successors made him very much missed. (CGB)
