Comment

At the Estates of 1671, when the crown asked for two million two hundred thousand livres, the Elected, as usual, were thrifty and offered just under a million. The king, far from being irritated, replied: "That's still too much, I'm content with eight hundred thousand livres; my aim has always been to relieve my subjects". This act of generosity caused profound astonishment; the States in body carried humble thanks to the King to the Prince of Condé, and protested their inviolable loyalty. The token interpreted such sentiments.
