Comment

Following the abolition of slavery, a law was passed on April 30, 1849 to grant compensation to the colonists for the liberation of slave labor in Reunion, Guadeloupe and Martinique. In 1851, Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte set the capital for Reunion at three million, to be paid into a bank authorized to issue bearer bills to be accepted as legal tender. With 150 shareholders, Banque de la Réunion opened in Saint-Denis in July 1853.
