The dolphin (Dauphin) was the traditional symbol for the Counts of Alban (Later the Dauphins of Viennois). In 1349, the Kingdom of France purchased the territory of Dauphiné, and the eldest son of the French king took the title of Dauphin.
The region of Dauphiné remained a province/state of the Kingdom of France until the French Revolution.
