Like the King's Council, the Chambre des Comptes was a dismemberment of the former King's Court, in the part responsible for overseeing the royal estate, handling finances and auditing the accounts of the King's agents. Its role was to register edicts and declarations concerning the estate, letters of annulment, naturalization, pensions, etc. It also registered marriage contracts and other legal documents. It also registered royal marriage contracts and peace treaties. The Chambre des Comptes had civil and criminal jurisdiction over its own officers and over offenses committed within its precincts near the Sainte-Chapelle. Its jurisdiction extended to the whole kingdom in certain areas (war, navy, colonies, royal treasury, highways and bridges, etc.), but the provincial audit chambers excluded certain accounts from its jurisdiction. The Chambre des Comptes prided itself on being the oldest in the kingdom, ahead of the Parlement. Its officers enjoyed important privileges: nobility, the title of king's counselor, free salt, exemptions from taille, corvée, etc.
