CLAUDE DE RYE, BARON DE BALANÇON (1645-1648).Claude de Rye, baron de Balançon, belonged to a house originally from England, which had settled in the county of Bourgogue towards the end of the 10th century. He was the third son of Philibert de Rye, Count of Varax, Governor of the Duchy of Guelders, and Claude de Tournou.
He was governor of Bréda and became a member of the Council of State in 1628 (' ).
His appointment as Governor of Namur dates from May 2, 1645 (2).

The date 1648 engraved on the right-hand side of the token is that of Baron de Balançon's death. The tokens bearing his arms were not distributed
after the governor's death; the list reads "Distribution des jetons de feu Son Ex... Balançon, gouverneur et capitaine général de la province de Namur", and the first item reads as follows: "primes a Sa dite Ex- ou à ses héritiers".
The governor's heirs were presented with 12 dozen silver tokens and as many copper tokens; each of the two deputies from the ecclesiastical
de Maulde, 6 dozen silver tokens and 7 copper tokens; to each of the two boarders, the two receivers and the clerk, 5 dozen silver tokens and 6 copper tokens; for a total of 79 dozen silver tokens and 92 dozen copper tokens.
On August 20, 1608, Clande de Rye married Claudine-Prospère de la Baume, daughter of Antoine de la Baume, comte de Montreuil, and Nicole de Montmartin. He died in office on March 24, 1648, aged 72.
