João VI Prince Regent gold Ingot of Vila Rica 1810 XF, Prober-1810-V-2642 (plated). Choice XF with only mild actual wear and rather pleasant surface quality under handsome old orangish patination. Toque (fineness) of 23 carats, with actual weight of 21.78 grams close to the theoretical indicated weight of 21.71 grams. Assayer initials V. C. R. for Veridiano da Costal Rangel. Slight mount removal evidence to the right edge where a small chain was attached previously (as plated in the H. Schulman catalog, see following) is present and accounts for the designation, yet is only visible upon closer inspection and thus not too obtrusive. A charming ingot from this rarer "mint" among this iconic series with only 43 specimens currently accounted for (see our lengthy description in lot 23978 in our Long Beach 9/2013 Signature Sale).
Ex. Hans Schulman 5/1966, lot 2455B for $1,200 (!)
